Sermon on 2 Peter 1:3-4 (what has God given us to live in)

Sermon on 2 Peter 1:3-4 (what has God given us to live in) “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these, he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.”

Understanding God’s Provision in 2 Peter 1:3-4:

1. Divine Power:

  • The passage begins by highlighting that God’s divine power is the source of everything we need. It’s not a mere earthly provision but a power that transcends the natural, empowering believers for a godly life.

2. Knowledge of God:

  • The conduit through which we receive this divine power is our knowledge of God. It’s not just an intellectual understanding but a deep, intimate knowledge that comes from a personal relationship with Him.

3. Called by Glory and Goodness:

  • We are called by God’s own glory and goodness. This emphasizes that our calling is not based on our merit but on God’s character. His glory and goodness set the foundation for our divine calling.

4. Great and Precious Promises:

  • God has given us great and precious promises. These promises serve as anchors in our lives, providing assurance, hope, and a foundation upon which we can build our faith.

5. Participation in the Divine Nature:

  • Through these promises, we have the remarkable opportunity to participate in the divine nature. This implies a profound transformation, aligning our character and values with God’s, reflecting His divine attributes.

6. Escaping Corruption:

  • The final aspect of these verses speaks of our escape from the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. God’s provisions not only empower us but also offer a way out from the destructive influences of the world.

In summary, 2 Peter 1:3-4 emphasizes that God has provided believers with divine power, knowledge of Him, a calling rooted in His glory and goodness, great promises, an invitation to partake in the divine nature, and a means to escape the corruption of the world. These gifts form the foundation for living a godly life and navigating the challenges of the world with faith and resilience.
